The neurosurgical department
has been established at the beginning of
Iraqi-Iranian war (science 1980) by the
effort of dr. Ameen Abbas and dr. Shafik
Alzayat. Initially it was busy centre during
the Iraqi-Iranian war and Gulf war, it has
received thousands of military and civilian
injured peoples. The centre was designed for
the management of only head trauma cases.
Now a days the centre
witnessed a great expansion in all resources
and treatment facilities.
It is one of the largest departments of
Basra Teaching Hospital (one of the major
hospitals in Basra city ). The general ward
of this centre has 22 bed for each
male and female patients.
The emergency department of
Basra Teaching Hospital
receive a bout 25 neurosurgical cases daily.
Some cases who need special care do so in
intensive care unite of Basra Teaching Hospital.
One major operating
room designed for neurosurgical cases, it
contains many neurosurgical instruments like
microscope, endoscope, and neuronavigation.
in the near future we hope to establish a
new operating room. Rehabilitations unit
running by trained physiotherapists provide
a care for many cases of neurosurgical
diseases. Neurosurgery outpatients unite is
one of the outstanding unite , it receive
about 15 patients each day from different
south Iraqi cities as well as Basra province.
